Cannabis Activist Brownie Mary

Mary Jane Rathbun – Women’s History Month Hero

Let’s take a moment to celebrate Mary Jane Rathbun. Canna-granny “Brownie Mary” contributed to the fight as a cannabis activist of the 1980’s and 1990’s. She infamously distributed cannabis brownies to San Francisco chemotherapy and AIDS patients to fight the affects of wasting syndrome. Mary was arrested for possession multiple times, each time gaining awareness for her cause.

In 1992 she helped establish the first medical cannabis dispensary in the USA. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of Mary Jane Rathbun and her fellow activists, medical marijuana was legalized in California. Other states seeing the success in California soon followed suit, enacting similar legislation.
